NewsPolice Kept Busy With Collisions YesterdayMay 10, 2010 The Owen Sound Police Service responded to five collisions yesterday, two of which involved vehicles colliding with traffic light and a hydro pole. At 9:00 am, police responded to the intersection of 10th Street East and 9th Avenue East for a collision with a traffic light pole on the northwest corner of the intersection. An investigation revealed that a transport truck and trailer had been northbound on 9th Avenue when the driver made a wide left turn onto 10th Street colliding with the pole and knocking it over. Police remained at the scene for three hours while service was being restored to the traffic lights at the intersection. A 43-year-old Brampton woman has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with making an improper turn. Just after 4:00 pm, police, Fire and EMS responded to the 1500 block of 4th Avenue West for a collision of a FORD Taurus with a hydro pole. The hydro pole had been snapped in two and live power lines were laying across the roadway. The driver, an 18-year-old Owen Sound male, narrowly missed hitting two trees and houses which were only a few feet away. An investigation revealed the driver had been northbound on 4th Avenue when he started to doze off to sleep thereby failing to negotiate a bend in the roadway and collided with the pole. The roadway was closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for approximately 2 ½ hours while a crew from Ontario Hydro attended, shut off the power and removed the power lines. Power to two houses was affected. The driver was not injured however was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons. He was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with Careless Driving. |
