Busy Weekend Results in Several Arrests

Stolen Vehicle

On Saturday, June 20th, 2010 a resident of the 2600 block of 8th Avenue East awoke to discover that his goldish-brown Ford motor vehicle had been stolen from his driveway over night. Police located the undamaged vehicle hours later, abandoned at a local shopping mall.

Break, Enter & Commit Mischief

Sometime overnight between Friday, June 18th – Saturday, June 19th culprit(s) unknown forced entry into an empty residential unit located in the 200 block of 9th Street West.

Once inside the apartment a culprit defecated upon the floor, causing damage by dragging it across a carpeted area. Culprit(s) also caused damage to a window. Total damage is estimated to be below $1000.

Taxi Driver Assaulted

At approximately 12:25 a.m. on Sunday, June 20th a cab driver at 1900 – 3rd Avenue East provided a quote of $25.00 for transportation west of the city. The man who requested the quote responded with a counter-offer of $20.00, which was declined. The man showed his displeasure by punching the 46-year old taxi driver twice in the face.

The cab driver did not require medical attention.

A 35-year old Bruce County male has been charged with assault. He was released from police custody once sober.


Attempt Theft from Police Parking Lot

At 2:53 a.m. on Sunday, June 20th, an alert dispatcher monitoring surveillance cameras observed a suspicious male within the employee parking lot of Owen Sound Police Services. The man had removed property from a parked vehicle but was disturbed while committing the theft by an officer. The male fled over a fence and a foot pursuit ensued.

Police established a perimeter of the 900 block of 3rd Avenue West & successfully contained the suspect within. Officers flushed out the male while he attempted to conceal himself in a resident’s back yard. Police continued to pursue the 22-year old on foot through the residential neighbourhood, with the man at one point falling into a kiddie-pool in a family’s back yard. He was captured a short time later and arrested.

The Lions Head area resident has been charged with trespassing, attempted theft, and prowl by night. He is scheduled to appear at Ontario Court of Justice to answer to the charges on July 29th, 2010.

Alcohol abuse and a complete lack of common sense were contributing factors.


Motor Vehicle Collision Results in Injuries

At approximately 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, June 20th, 2010 several phone calls were received by 9-1-1 operators regarding a serious motor vehicle collision on 9th Avenue East at 6th Street East. Tiered response was activated. 

Paramedics, fire fighters and police responded. Fire fighters extricated one person with assistance of the Jaws of Life.

The occupants from both vehicles were transported by paramedics to hospital, 3 by land ambulance. The 4th person, a female 71-year old passenger from an involved Honda, was transported by air ambulance to London with non-life threatening head injuries.

Witnesses report that the 21-year old male driving a Ford Mustang disobeyed a red light, striking the Honda while its 73-year old driver was making a left turn on a green light. The Ford’s driver, who resides in the Ayton area, has been charged with Disobey Red Light – Fail to Stop, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. 

The status of the injuries to the 4 involved persons is not available to the writer. Both vehicles received extensive damage. 


Theft from Auto

On Monday, June 21st, 2010 at approximately 12:40 a.m. police responded to the 1500 block of  7th Avenue West regarding a theft from an automobile parked in a resident’s driveway.

Four persons wearing dark hoodies were seen prowling on the victim’s property and last observed fleeing eastbound on foot. The victim discovered that his vehicle had been unlawfully entered and his GPS stolen from within, prompting a call to police.

Police response was immediate, however, no arrests were made for the theft, and no property was recovered.

Police did discover unrelated offences, resulting in the arrest of an 18-year old Owen Sound male for breaching curfew conditions of his probation; and the arrest of a 20-year old Owen Sound male for being in possession of a controlled substance (suspected marihuana under 30 grams). Both males are to be released on Promise to Appears to attend court in late July. A 3rd Owen Sound male, 18 years of age, was charged with possession of a controlled substance (suspected marihuana under 30 grams) and released on an Appearance Notice.
 
Citizens are reminded that the majority of theft from auto offences can simply be avoided by locking their motor vehicles and ensuring valuables are not left within. Police also encourage anyone witnessing suspicious persons to contact police immediately.
