Crossing Guards

School Crossing Guards are responsible for safely crossing our children at intersections near schools in the City of Owen Sound.  Our Crossing Guards are reliable and responsible men and women who interact well with children and are committed to their safety.

Crossing Guards must be available in the morning before school, during lunch hour and after school, five days a week for the school year.  Guards are assigned to specific posts for the duration of the school year and must provide their own transportation to and from the post.  Applications must successfully pass a background investigation prior to employment, and must be capable of standing for two to four hours at a time in all weather conditions.  Crossing Guards must be 18 years of age or older.  No experience is necessary, all training is provided.  Crossing Guards must be pleasant, courteous and helpful towards all members of the public at all times.  All weekends and holidays are off, which makes this an ideal job for retired persons or those wanting a short workweek.  All equipment such as safety vests and stop signs are provided by the City of Owen Sound.

What do Crossing Guards do?

  • Provide safety for school children at school crossings
  • Escort children across the street going to and from school
  • Help prevent children from crossing in unsafe traffic conditions until it is safe
  • Report licence numbers of cars who fail to slow down in our school crossing zones, or who fail to stop for school buses or children crossing with the Crossing Guard.
  • They must familiarize themselves with the location and purpose of street traffic signs and designated traffic areas such as the Community Safety Zones.
