Officers Attacked By Dog During Impaired Arrest

March 8th, 2026

An Owen Sound resident was charged with impaired driving after failing a roadside screening device. Owen Sound police received a call from a citizen Saturday evening about a possible impaired driver in the area of 16th Street East. The caller reported a white pick-up being driven erratically, hitting curbs and disobeying traffic controls. Officers responded to the area and conducted a traffic stop in the 1900 block of 17th Street East. Police administered a roadside screening device which the male failed and he was arrested. During the arrest, a dog that was in the suspect’s truck attacked an officer, biting them multiple times. A second officer intervened and the dog released the first officer. The dog then charged a third officer in an aggressive manner and that officer, fearing for their safety, dispatched the dog with their service pistol.

The accused was transported back to the station and provided breath samples to a qualified technician resulting in readings above the legal limit. The male was charged with Impaired Operation and Operation with more the 80 mgs of alcohol in 100mls of blood and will appear in the Owen Sound court on April 16th, 2026.

The officer that was attacked was transported to hospital by ambulance and received emergency medical care for the bites and was released.
