MEDIA RELEASE

Owen Sound Police Honour Community Volunteers

Seven community members were honoured and recognized today at the Owen Sound Police Service Board meeting for longstanding volunteer service to the community.  The honourees were all part of the Citizen’s on Patrol Unit, a group of citizen volunteers who volunteer their time to patrol the streets and attempt to be extra eyes and ears for the police, reporting on crimes and suspicious circumstances that they observe.  The volunteers were recognized for years of service ranging from ten to thirty years with the Unit.   Recent changes to legislative requirements which would have led to substantive changes to the operation of the Unit led to a joint decision by the Service and membership to retire the Unit  at the end of 2025.  Chief Ambrose said about the Unit “These members have collectively donated thousands of hours of their time over the years doing their part to assist in keeping Owen Sound safe, and we can’t thank them enough.  It is this kind of dedication and commitment that sets Owen Sound apart and continues to make this a great place to live.”

The Service continues to be supported by volunteers within the Owen Sound Auxiliary Police Unit and any community members who may be interested in volunteerism in support of public safety are invited to contact the Service for further details.
