Owen Sound Police Service Launches CamSafe
As we celebrate provincial Police Week, Owen Sound Police Service (OSPS) is proud to join other police services across Ontario in launching CamSafe, a voluntary camera registry program that empowers the public to partner with police to solve crime. OSPS encourages residents, business owners and others with surveillance cameras on their properties to register them online any time at CamSafe.ca.
CamSafe represents a significant leap forward in community-driven efforts to promote safety and combat crime effectively throughout our neighbourhoods. The voluntary province-wide program and web-based site enables residents and business owners the ability to register their CCTV systems, security cameras, or doorbell cams so that police investigators have timely access to that information. Police can check the database in an area of interest to see who has cameras and the owner’s contact information. Once enrolled, participants become invaluable allies, assisting OSPS investigations following incidents within their vicinity.
The CamSafe registry program lets officers know where registered cameras are located in the event of a crime in a specific area. However, the program maintains its commitment to privacy and security by not allowing any direct access to camera videos or personal account information. It does, however, serve as an invaluable resource, offering leads on potential footage to aid in investigations.
Residents and businesses can securely register their cameras at CamSafe.ca, providing basic information like name, address, contact details, the number of cameras on their property, and camera directions. Most importantly, participants retain complete autonomy, possessing the ability to add, modify, or remove information from their CamSafe account at their convenience.
Studies have shown security cameras have not only reduced crime rates but also act as an extra set of eyes to help police identify and apprehend criminals. It is important to remember that every camera in our community has the power to help find a missing person, solve a crime, and protect our homes and loved ones. The more cameras registered at CamSafe.ca, the safer and more secure our community will become.
"We encourage Owen Sound residents and businesses equipped with security cameras to register on CamSafe,” said Chief Craig Ambrose. “Your participation is critical in supporting OSPS’ efforts and by working together, we can make our community safer and more secure for everyone. For more information, I urge everyone to visit CamSafe.ca.”
